Disability Programs

In many schools a learning support team - of teachers, parents/caregivers, other support staff and students - meets regularly to make sure the ongoing needs of students with disabilities are met.

School community members may help with:

bulletlearning programs developed by teaching staff
bulletmobility
bulletpersonal care
bulletsafety
bullethealth care procedures
bulletliaison between the school and its community
bulletspecial provisions, such as a 'reader' or 'writer' for an examination

To be eligible for these programs students must have an identified disability as defined by the Department of Education and Training criteria and have essential educational needs that are directly related to their identified disability.

Itinerant Support Teacher, Hearing (ISTH) are trained in the education of students with hearing impairment and offer support to families and carers of children from the age of diagnosis to Year 12.

Braille and Large Print Services

This service produces texts and external examinations in braille and large print and maintains a comprehensive library in both formats.

Itinerant Support Teacher Vision (ISTV)

Itinerant Support Teacher Vision (ISTV) are teachers trained in the education of students with vision impairment and offer support to families and carers of children from the age of diagnosis to Year 12.

Health Care

Health care planning is required for all students who have significant health care needs because of disabilities or medical conditions. Schools can access advice from the District Special Education Consultant and the Senior Education Officer for High Support Needs.

Building Modifications

Building modifications may need to be made so that students with disabilities have access to the school. Contact the local school or district office for specific information regarding access and building modifications.

Access and participation team

The APT provides consultancy, resources and information to government and non-government schools and agencies to assist with students, aged between 0-20 years, who have severe disabilities. There are educators, speech pathologists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists in the APT team.

Transport

Special transport services are provided for some students with disabilities who are unable to travel independently to and from school and whose families are unable to arrange for transport. Contact your local school or district office for more information.

Support Technology

Support technology is available for students who have a diagnosed disability. The technology/equipment may help with classroom learning or physical access and personal care needs. The Senior Education Officer, Support Technology provides information, support and advice to schools and districts.

The school principal, teachers, school counsellors and other members of the local community are available to support students with disabilities.

Complaints

Complaints about disability discrimination can be lodged through the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. Talk to your principal or your district Disability programs Consultant if you are experiencing difficulties or disability discrimination.
